No time today for propaganda

With war looming abroad and civil liberties eroding at home, it is not easy to find objective news sources. Most people rarely venture off the worn-out path of the popular media, either not being aware of other sources, too accustomed to their daily rations of mainstream TV and newspaper reports, or simply they don't care.

As sad as this situation is, readers of this Suite101 topic clearly do not fall into any of these categories, why else would they be reading and subscribing to the topic? Hopefully, because I try to maintain an interesting, critical and uncompromising view on international affairs. This month's article is a special treat for all of you who would like to read a whole lot more, more than can currently be posted on Suite101. The special treat: I am giving away some of my sources!!! The catch? Please spread the word and bookmark some or all of the sites yourself!!

So let's get straight to the pint, the Suites' that is and make your choice of news source that lets you see well beyond what the big guys want you to know.

Newtopia magazine

This is a very new addition in my own collection. The online magazine (an "e-zine") sets out to be

- a modern sociological-culture review that examines how our Politics and Policies are reflected in our Arts, Government, and Humanities. - an experimental form of thought mutation and cross-breeding, providing a unconventional forum for a range of detailed and informed socio-political opinion and analysis. - a place for words or ideas used for the development of new possibilities, theories, and solutions for a better world. Often confused with the word idealistic. They more than meet this objective! Visit them at: http://www.newtopiamagazine.net

truthout

truthout is now in its third year of providing readers with critical news and commentary on world events. Truthout currently reaches a quarter of a million readers per month. Visit at: http://www.truthout.com/index.htm

AlterNet.org AlterNet.org is a project of the Independent Media Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting independent and alternative journalism. First launched in 1998, AlterNet's online magazine provides a mix of news, opinion and investigative journalism on subjects ranging from the environment, the drug war, technology and cultural trends to policy debate, sexual politics and health issues. The AlterNet article database includes more than 7,000 stories from over 200 sources. Visit at: http://www.alternet.org/

Global Witness This London-based non-governmental organisation focuses on the links between environmental exploitation and human rights abuses, especially the impacts of natural resource exploitation upon countries and their people. Using pioneering investigative techniques Global Witness compiles information and evidence to be used in lobbying and to raise awareness. The information is used to brief governments, inter-governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations and the media in order to create practical change. Global Witness has no political affiliation. Together with Partnership Africa Canada, the NGO was nominated for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize. The nomination was made by United States Congressmen Tony P. Hall and Frank R. Wolf, and by US Senator Patrick Leahy, for the efforts that the two organizations have devoted to ending the trade in 'conflict diamonds'.
