Democracy Corroded - Time for a new paint-job or an overhaul?The near naturalness of fifty percent voter turnouts nowadays, should not obscure the view on the factors behind such democratic absenteeism. Where the possibility of genuine political change is seen merely as an abstract and theoretical electoral outcome, democracies around the world are under serious threat of being instrumentalized by the few, the self-chosen and the system players and arrangers. A deeper democratic engagement of politically informed citizens who are prepared to peacefully oppose political opportunism, administrative lethargy and the absence of democracy in the economic sphere, is truly not in clear sight. Or, should one hope that it is bubbling beneath the peeling paint-job of some of today’s democracies?
