Turn the Reins Over

A parrot becomes the workhorse inside the computer replacing the one sitting at the keyboard. Mindmaker, Inc. offers an intelligent personal assistant software called Prody Parrot® 2.0.

This parrot is your PC host and will do whatever you tell it to do. Yes folks, whatever you TELL it to do. This is the latest in voice recognition technology and it is reasonably priced to run on your Windows®95/98 desktop for under $100.

Technology has forged ahead, this voice recognition software is more advanced than those that came before it. Prody Parrot® understands your commands, regardless of who is speaking. In the past, voice recognition software had to be "trained" to respond to your voice alone. With today's technology, anyone can give the commands. The parrot can even learn new ones!

What exactly can you get this parrot to do, you ask? As your personal assistant, you can have Prody monitor your email in-box and alert you to new mail. As your own personal assistant, have Prody track stocks, remind you of important appointments in your personal schedule, schedule on-line meetings, make Internet calls, give news and weather summaries, tutor you on a variety of topics, surf the Web, and even control certain Windows® functions.

Fir example, just mutter, "Start Excel," and voila! The MS Excel program will be up and running, waiting for you to say the command, "File" and "Open." Although Prody comes with a limited vocabulary, the ability to teach it new commands is exciting. This type of software can be especially useful for those who are handicapped or those with repetitive stress injuries. Voice recognition programs offer these folks much sought after independence.

Unfortunately, along with most new technology, there are some drawbacks. Prody Parrot® 2.0 sometimes gets confused when you are speaking and often will misunderstand a command. Some people might find that having to teach the parrot new commands can be a daunting task. Prody also puts quite a strain on your system. Some users noticed all other programs on their PC running significantly slower. You will need a PC with a 166 MHz Pentium®, at least 32 MB of RAM, and high quality speakers (along with a microphone) in order to fulfill the minimum system requirements.

Michael J. Himowitz of Fortune.com recently took Prody for a test drive. You can check out his review for more information or visit the Mindmaker web site.
