Infertility knows no age

Well, I admitted it, I'm infertile. It took a lot of courage to do so and it took a lot of time to figure out the why. You wanna know the truth though? I still haven't figured why it happens to some and not to others. See I was the exception to the rule, 18 years old and doing serious infertility treatments. Who would ever in a million years think that someone my age couldn't get pregnant. You think of someone who's 18, and you think of a girl getting pregnant on accident, that's the societal stereotype. Not someone visiting the doctors office for ultrasounds and blood work, procedure after grueling procedure.

It never crosses most people's minds but the truth of the matter is, infertility knows no age. Whether you are 18 or 45 it still hurts. It is still not something you want to deal with. Desperation still can overwhelm you. Being young or being old doesn't change that something that is supposed to be so natural is not. I think it's important to hear a variety of stories from all ages. Here is how our journey began.

At the age of 15 I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), I never gave it a second thought. Okay so I had some minor symptoms that were upsetting as a teenager. I had acne, hair in places it wasn't supposed to be, on the high side as far as weight went, and testosterone levels that could rival any mans'. I went to see an endocrinologist she prescribed 3 drugs and I went on my way. That particular combo of glucophage, aldactone, and birth control made the worlds greatest difference in me. I lost a ton of weight, I felt better, I looked better and the acne and hair disappeared. I stayed on my medications and merrily graduated and met my husband. My husband and I got engaged and I scheduled my yearly check up at the gynecologist. I went by myself thinking it was gonna be another, in and out have a Pap smear appointment. It was the farthest thing from it. They had always done ultrasounds on my ovaries to make sure that they were looking "decent", that's their words not mine. My ovaries always had the string of pearls but as long as I stayed on my medications they were a rather small strand not the large cysts I had had before my medications.
