Child Carriers

Frame backpacks can be fun for children because they get to sit up high next to someone they love and where they can see all around them. Frame backpack child carriers can be ideal for wearing baby while cooking, while gardening, or around town while shopping or walking around the park or zoo. They keep baby safe and give the wearer full use of both of their arms.

Frame backpacks can be used for older babies--starting at around six months--up through four years old. Babies who cannot hold themselves or their head up should not ride in these carriers. Babies who cannot sit up shouldn't be placed in a child carrier backpack because a baby who can't sit up yet and is forced into this position will get a very sore back (and can result in other medical problems).

An alternative to frame backpacks are soft cloth combination front and backpack carriers which can be used for little babies and toddlers, though they cannot usually be used for older toddlers or preschoolers. For instance, the Celebration Front & Back PackĀ® Soft Carrier by Evenflo can be used for babies six pounds to 26 pounds, up to 18 months, and the Front & Back 3 Way Carrier by Snugli can be used from newborn up to 30 pounds.

The best of this type of carrier--way ahead of the rest--is the Baby Trekker. A Baby Trekker has much more versatility since baby can be worn in five different positions. It has lots of padding for the baby and on the wide straps and waist belt making it comfortable for the wearer and their baby. Also, it can be used for a long time--it fits babies from eight to 40 pounds.

Before you buy a child carrier, be sure to research to make sure the one you are considering buying hasn't been subject to a safety recall. Also, if possible, try it on and carry your baby around for a while before deciding whether or not to buy it to see if it's comfortable for you and your baby.
