Support for Infant Potty Training

5. Books . . . Ask your librarian if your library has any books on infant potty training. If not, request your library to either acquire its own copy or get you a copy via InterLibrary Loan.

6. Siblings . . . Siblings can motivate, inspire and help you potty your baby. Sometimes siblings can read a baby better than their mother can!

7. Yourself . . . Don't be too hard on yourself. Don't expect too much too soon. Remain relaxed and upbeat. Pat yourself on the back for being such a wonderful mama.

*** DISCRIMINATION AND MYTHS ***

It sometimes helps to know that others face the same discrimination as you. It helps to know that you're not alone and that certain myths are rampant, almost to the point of being (boring!) mantras. Medlore and myths have been created and spread by a small number of self-proclaimed medical experts who are in bed with the diaper industry, as well as psychologists who have everything to gain from instilling fear in people. Once these myths enter the mainstream, they are hard to overcome. Here is a selection of some of the most common myths and medlore:

1. "Mommy is potty trained." (yawn)

2. "A baby cannot be aware of elimination." (absolutely false)

3. "A baby has no control over elimination until the age of 2 years or older." (If you start IPT before 2 years, this is false.)

4. "I don't believe you. It's impossible." (Western conditioning)

5. It's too inconvenient," or the opposite attack, "It's purely for your convenience not to have to wash diapers; you're lazy and selfish." (ridiculous!)

6. "It's pressuring the baby. You'll harm your baby." (This refers to a different method and approach and not to IPT.)

7. "It makes you obsess about elimination." (preposterous)

8. "A baby isn't a baby without full-time diapers." (Parents are attached to diapers, not babies!)

9 "It isn't any faster than conventional toilet training." (IPT is an alternative to using full-time diapers. It does not claim to be faster than other methods, although often it is. It is NOT about finishing before or after anyone else, but rather according to a baby's natural and unrestricted development.)
