I didn't know what to expect necessarily, other than a good time, when I went to see OhGr and Hate Dept. at the Masquerade in Atlanta on June 22. All in all, a good time was had.
I have a friend, Eric, who until this day still refers to the 1996 Front Line Assembly tour as "that Die Krupps/Numb show that FLA played at". Though I don't necessarily agree with him about the degree to which FLA had been overshadowed (not caring much for FLA, myself) I suppose that I understood his feeling, though never had I experienced it for myself. Hate Dept. was to change that forever. When Hate Dept. finally graced the stage, they tore through their seemingly short set with punkish verve. Steven Seibold commented on several occasions about the sad state of the goths in the audience. It is a rare commodity to attempt and accomplish pissing off an audience sheerly by your snide comments. Seibold accomplished this. I've been to many shows where an audience turned on a horrid opening band, but never have I seen such a lame mess of gothic wannabes and scenesters so affronted by one man's mockery of their "sad sack" image and dark aesthetic. Seibold is my hero. And, conveniently enough, Hate Dept. is my favorite band. So, the rest of their set was met with bitching and moaning from the goths in the audience. Such overheard phrases: "he's stupid, goth isn't dead." Thank you. But, no, goth IS dead. OhGr on the other hand was... there. Incessant moshing broke up what could have been a decent show. I don't know how others feel about moshing, but people moshing to overly slow and poppy OhGr songs is too much and too far and I want it stopped. Never have I wanted anything banned as much as moshing. There's nothing worse when attempting to enjoy a show than a rowdy bunch, pushing you around, because they came to be morons and not to see a concert. At best, the OhGr show was interesting. At worst, it was hardly worth the effort of going to see it. The music didn't translate terribly well to a live venue and Ogre's voice is one of those that works well only in the confines of the studio environment. And Skold is looking really hacked out. He needs to go to a spa or something. But I had a good time. Hate Dept. made my night. OhGr was interesting to see. This was Hate Dept.'s first time in Atlanta and I hope they return. Go To Page: 1 2
