One last point: My reclusiveness has now begun to border on obsession, by choice again. Not only have I decided not to visit the countries where my books will be published, I have not even applied for a passport yet! So even if the books happen to sell well, my publishers can't really expect me to come on publicity tours without a passport!

My first project is The Ramayana, an imaginative retelling of the ancient Indian epic that attempts to recreate ancient mythic India in all its glory. Because of publishing limitations, it's being split into six parts. The first is titled PRINCE OF AYODHYA and will appear first in a paperback edition from Time Warner Books UK in the UK and Commonwealth countries in February 2003. The US hardcover collector's edition will follow in August, then the German edition from Random House Verlagsgruppe, and so on. There are no religious implications to the story--this is a literary work, not propaganda. I've already finished the whole story and am polishing each book as it goes into production.
