Indy 4 creating buzz

The recent hullabaloo that Indiana Jones 4 is moving forward sparked me to write about it. I have been avoiding the rumors about the project because that’s just what they are, rumors. The prospect for a fourth film in the series has been around for about ten years now and we haven’t heard anything more than Lucas, Spielberg, and Ford are interested in making the film.

The scoop is the parties involved have a story but not a script. A story could just be an idea for the film or it could be hammered out in long form but just not in script form. That part wasn’t made clear. It’s supposedly based on an idea Lucas came up with, which is what he did for the other three films. Technically the Indiana Jones movies are his babies, not Spielberg’s. I’m guessing they have a plot idea and set pieces but not much more than that; it was also mentioned the project has a title but it’s being kept under wraps. I’m sure the title will be “Indiana Jones and the (fill in the blank).”

Like any Indiana Jones fan I’m excited that finally there is movement on the fourth film, but I hope Spielberg and Lucas are cautious because the third film will be hard to beat. If the fourth film is rushed into production and slapped together and the final product is mediocre then the series will go out on a sour note and no one wants that. I can safely say that once a fourth film is made it will be the last.

There are three things I hope Lucas and Spielberg keep in mind once the script begins the drafting phase:

1) Don’t try and mirror Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a great movie but loses points because it copies Raiders too much. This basically means, no Nazis and no artifacts rooted in the Bible. For the fourth film, stay true to the character but put him through something completely different the way Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom did.

2) Don’t give him a son or daughter to train and take up the mantle.

3) Portray Indiana Jones at the age of Harrison Ford. It’s been almost 13 years since Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, therefore the character should match that in age.

I very excited that this movie is at least getting some buzz again. Let’s just hope that buzz translates onto the big screen.
