Indiana Jones fan Scott Van Ornum has taken homemade collectibles to the next level. He has a life-size display of the character in his house. It stands in a corner of a room, but it doesn’t overpower the room.

“Eventually I thought besides just having posters and props on hand what would be the ultimate Indy item to have and eventually it was decided, "Indy" himself,” Scott said.

Scott has props from the movies, such as the Cross of Coronado, the Holy Grail, grail diary, and the Goddess of Fertility idol in his house. He is constantly updating and adding to the collection until every available prop is obtained. With no life-size “prop” of Indiana Jones available, Scott took it upon himself to make one, or, at least part of one.

Scott admitted to not having any artistic ability to sculpt such a thing, but his love for the character didn’t stop him from commissioning a sculptor who works in the movie industry to craft a good likeness of Harrison Ford’s head. The project took over a year to complete, but the finished result was well worth the wait.

“The head is actually made out of latex to give it a real life-like appearance,” the fan said. “The real bottle neck is of course the head which is not real readily available so with some luck and descent connections a good likeness was obtained.”

The first sculpt he had done portrayed Indy as a caricature rather than a portrait and the likeness was not as great as the current figure. From the neck down, Indiana Jones is the product of Scott’s wallet and creativity. The Indy display is constructed from a 3/4 torso, which is polymer based and with some basic hardware Scott was able to create a posture for the figure which only took less than an afternoon.

A modification was made to accommodate the head and the arms are essentially made from cable. The hands were sculpted and are simply attached to the cable.

The authentic clothes and accessories are easily obtainable through special shops or the Internet, so Scott dressed the display himself. Scott said the whole display of Indiana Jones cost around $2,500.

“I believe the fact that Indy is a pure character and the sense of adventure has always been an interest to me,” he said. “Considering we both have Ph.D.s (Scott’s in chemistry), I like the intellectual qualities of the character as well. It seems like Indy was an only child as myself and was virtually autonomous is his studies which I can relate to during my graduate work.”

Ready for action.
Needs a shave.
