Matchfixing : Tarnishing the image of Cricket

© Ankush Arora

Matchfixing has tarnished the image of cricket with new allegations coming up everyday. The ICC and cricket authorities can evidently do little to stop people from maligning the game with unsubstantiated allegations. In such circumstances, it is difficult to say who is the worst sufferer, the clean cricketer or the cricket lover whose emotions run high and low based on cricket matches which are being alleged as nothing but staged performances.

The most telling image of the state of the game for the cricket lover was its icon -till recently, the highest wicket take in test match cricket and still the only cricketer in the world to have taken 400+ wickets and scored more than 5,000 runs... a player who has evidently given 100% to the game for 16 years- Kapil Dev weeping in front of the nation on television.

Obviously, opinions are divided among cricket lovers on how true these and other allegations are, but one thing is clear that the image of the game has gone down like never before. My personal opinion is that such unsubstantiated allegations should certainly not be made public as they cause irreversible damage to the status of committed cricketers. As it is, as long as the allegations are unsubstantiated by proof, making them public serves no real purpose.
