INDIAN SPORTSTARS OF THE MILLENIUM.


What is sport without its heroes, prima donnas and professionals? May be they mean different things to different people. Every one of them, of course, has a persona that attracts happiness, hatred, hero-worship and downright envy. As the old millenium pulls down its curtain, and pins it with a new one, we as a nation, salute the following 13 sportsmen who have done proud to India. As per the survey conducted by my team in leading engineering colleges of MUMBAI UNIVERSITY I present to you their names in ascending order of votes.

13. RAMANATHAN KRISHNAN (tennis) Ramanathan krishnan twice reached the semi finals of the mega grandslam tennis event WIMBLEDON. He kept the conservative but critical audience of the world stage in a state of thrall through his touch, grace, and artistry, lifting the whole aspect of tennis to aesthetic brilliance.

12. JASPAL RANA(shooting) Jaspal Rana has done India proud on more than one occasion by winning medals at international level.

11. PRAKASH PADUKONE(badminton) Badminton ace Prakash Paducone has given the onlookers fascinating new dimensions to achieve success.

10. P.T.USHA(athletics) P.T.Usha represented a different genre of womanhood when she missed the podium by a mere hundredth of a second at Los Angeles. She is a true sportswoman.

9. GEET SETHI(billiards) The stalwart of green baize Geet Sethi continued India's excellent run in billiards and brought laurels to the nation at regular intervals.

8. MILKHA SINGH(athletics) It was Milkha Singh who showed that a world record was not beyond the ken of an Indian.

7. DHYANCHAND(hockey) For his magnificent skill with the hockey stick, Dhyanchand had earned the sobriquet 'The Wizard' from the masters who taught us hockey.

6. VISHWANATHAN ANAND(chess) The exploits of chess prodigy, V. Anand have always been a source of inspiration for young Indians aspiring a career in chess.

5. MAHESH BHUPATHY(tennis) Mahesh has 3 grandslam tittles under his belt including the WIMBLEDON. He is the first Indian to win a grandslam. He started a new era in the history of Indian tennis when he lifted the French Open cup at the Roland Garros.

4. KAPIL DEV(cricket) Kapil holds the world record for the maximum number of test wickets. What needs to be projected is the incandescent spirit that lies beneath the remarkable feet.

3. LEANDER PAES(tennis) Leander symbolizes in the current phase of sport, the saga of courage, endurance, fitness, fortitude and, above all an earthy sense of humor that blends beautifully with his philosophical rhetoric.
