THE TREKKING REGIONS OF GARHWAL AND KUMAON

It is here that the Nanda Devi peak ( 7816 m ) resides. Nanda Devi is considered by many to be the most beautiful peak in the Indian Himalayas and if there is any other claimant, then it is often Shivling peak, also in Uttarakhand ! In fact the region is said to have more than a hundred peaks over 6,000 m, and perhaps more than any other mountain state in the Indian Himalayas. Nanda Devi peak also enjoys quite a reputation with a very prominent place in the history of explorations in the Himalayas. There was also a great drama in reaching its sanctuary ( now a protected zone ), with many high peaks guarding its sanctuary making the access nearly impossible. Then there is the other fact of its history. It was for long considered the highest peak in the world. Nanda Devi is the second highest peak in India, with the highest being Kangchenjunga in Sikkim, which in turn, is the third highest in the world.
