  • Set aside time, make a list of what you are searching for, and stick to it. No surfing for pleasure. Search for sites on setting up a business, working from home, marketing, and more. If time is limited, use each period set aside for just one topic.
  • Bookmark the sites, or save to your Favorite Places, whatever it's called. Do NOT read the web sites at this time! THIS is just surfing and bookmarking time.
  • Come back at a later date, when you have some mini time, and go to the web sites you've bookmarked. NOW is the time to read.
This method overcomes distractions and helps you stay focused. Often, when we get to a web site, we get distracted and want to read about this, or follow that link over there.

In addition, if you have just 2 to 10 minutes of mini time, you can spend that much time just trying to find a good web site. Better to bookmark the web sites in a separate surfing session, then use your mini time to explore the actual web site.

This method limits the amount of non-productive time.

MARKETING MATTERS

It's easy for someone to say: "Plan your marketing campaign." This list will help you with a few specifics so you can plan your marketing campaign.

42. Research publishers you want to work for. There are several ways to do this. Look in the Writer's Market, Literary MarketPlace, search on the Internet for publishers, or go to a bookstore (or library) and look in the fronts of books that have been published in your chosen field. Get the initial contact info (like an address, telephone number, and more). Also, remember to check out their web sites and reference publications that will give you more insight about the company in general. You will probably need to take pen and paper if you go to the bookstore or library.

43. Decide if sales promotions would work for your situation, and if so, which ones and how.

44. Keep an eye on non-fiction "Best Sellers." This can help you identify trends that may be emerging. Especially helpful if you haven't decided what field to specialize in.

45. Plan which media you will use in your marketing and publicity campaign. The proverbial marketing package is just one media.

Will you develop a press release for your local newspaper when you officially open your business? Will you advertise in certain trade magazines?

Will you appear on a morning show (associated with one of the syndicates) to discuss why indexes are important, how local businesses can benefit, and what you have to offer? How about appearing on the local cable show that showcases a local business?
