34. Learn about hardware. What do you really need for indexing? What do you want? What kind of backup system do you want in case of failures? Which companies offer the best tech support? What companies offer the best price? What's the best store in your area for buying these things?
35. Learn how to protect your equipment. The following is a quote, and I would really like to give the person credit, but have no idea where it came from. But, I cannot take credit for this jewel of information: "Move mission-critical equipment away from doors and windows where they can be damaged by debris, wind, or water during storms. Protect major...equipment...from dirt, dust, debris, moisture, food, and power fluctuations....Use equipment covers to protect from water leaks from overhead pipes and facilities...." This is just the beginning in learning to care for your equipment! 36. Create a web page for your business. This is a short statement that actually involves much time. You need to learn to use web page software, or learn the HTML programming language. You need to learn about proper graphics, layout, and giving your page a professional appearance. 37. Learn how to transfer files, import and export files with your indexing software, Email attachments, and more. Try to use friends on different ISP's than yourself. You will create more problems (and get them resolved) before it really happens with a client on a different ISP other than your own! Transfers between people using the same ISP work much more smoothly. Get prepared for the worst! 38. Recreate a published index using your chosen software. Learn the features that make it look like the one published. 39. While you are recreating that published index, print the entries out in page number order and analyze the entries with the book. This will give you insight into the mind of the indexer. Although any index will do, for this particular exercise, learn the most by recreating an award-winning index. 40. If you fax with your computer, learn to do this with your friends, too. Some faxing software is a real "bear" to work with. Learn the in's and out's of your faxing software before you really need it. 41. Surf the web for sources of information. Although this could easily be called a mini, in reality, surfing the web can be a very non-productive waste of time.
