Over 80 Productive Things to Do

© Dawney Spencer

Waiting. I don't know anyone who enjoys playing the Waiting Game.

If you are just waiting, it's a waste of your life. You need to learn to make the most of "wait" time. Then you are no longer waiting. You are being productive.

This is especially true if you take the USDA distance-learning indexing classes.

However, if the turnaround time for the USDA classes was very fast, many of the items on the list below would never get done. Many a would-be indexer would just jump right in, without setting a good foundation for a real business. This "wait" time forces an indexer to tend to other aspects of business. So, instead of viewing "wait" time as a negative, consider it a grand opportunity to get ready for the future!

Some of the items below have been discussed more thoroughly in previous articles at the Indexing topic here at Suite 101. But they are included here, in brief. Print this list out. There is great satisfaction in marking items off as you do them.

There are at least five general areas that you can be work on while waiting for lessons to come back from the USDA. The broad topics are: indexing, computer, business, marketing, and mini.

Mini?

The mini category includes things that you can do to fill 2 to 10 minutes. Your days should not be filled with mini items. However, you will find that throughout the day, you will need a mini thing or two to fill in some little daily wait time.

THE LIST

We'll start with the mini's so you can start being productive RIGHT NOW! The items in the other categories need a little thought and time, so they may take longer to implement. Mini's can be done NOW.

Mini's can also be used during a transition period, such as when starting to work in the morning, but the "morning fog" hasn't quite cleared. Even during these foggy periods, you can be productive with the following mini items. You can also use them in the afternoon if your energy wanes, instead of walking away from your office area and getting "out of the working mood." These mini's also serve as a business-oriented diversion when your body needs a break from keyboarding.

MINI FOCUS (only 2 to 10 minutes)

1. Update telephone numbers and addresses.

2. File paperwork.

3. Plan the next day.

4. Browse an office supplies catalog.

5. Defragment your computer.

6. Dust the office.

7. Water the office plants.
