We are continuing our look at averting business disasters from a freelance indexing viewpoint. Health issues are the hardest to deal with when it comes to business disaster preparedness, particularly if they are one-time health situations and not chronic on-going issues.
If you have chronic health problems, then you are dealing with them from the very first day of indexing. But, one-time health issues can derail your business. One summer, my husband broke his foot--dumping everything on me in the middle of my busiest part of the year. It's during this time I depend on Dear Husband to mow the lawn, get groceries and cook meals, and basically keep us afloat. Instead, he had to stay off of his foot, and I had to drive him to doctors all over hither and yon. To a certain extent, indexing is portable and you can take it with you. But, I really dislike working while I'm in a doctor's office. If I'm in a doctor's office, believe me, I'm stressed out. I don't make friendly office visits. I'm in the doctor's office because there is a problem, which means stress. We depended on the goodness of family and friends to get us through. Some mowed our lawn. Others brought over meals. Many things, like dusting, just didn't get done. Just about the time he got back on his feet, I had major surgery during a semi-busy season. The only thing you can do is know the cycle of your publishers, if you have any choice in when you are going to be scheduled for surgery. I knew my clients slow down during December and January. It isn't completely dead, but it's not as busy as summertime. I had the luxury of holding off for a couple of months to wait until this time period. And, I made sure everything was done before I went in-dusting, mopping, vacuuming, bathrooms, and yes, indexing projects. I wanted to just come home from the hospital and rest. Nonetheless, this was an eye-opening time period. We learned that neither of us is capable of taking care of everything. And, it will be worse if I were to break a bone and can't index, or can't finish an indexing project. The end result from both of these one-time health incidents was that we decluttered inside and outside.
