Business Disaster Preparedness--Part 4

Until I found him, we were using public library access to keep in touch with my clients.

Moral of the story. Don't drop your cellphone when you are 700 miles from home! Technology doesn't match from location to location, and it is not a matter of being simple fix to just go into the local carrier's store and buy a new phone--particularly if you use your cellphone as a modem like I do! And, if you MUST travel with a cellphone guard it with your life. Your BUSINESS LIFE. Also, always know where various libraries are, and what the hours of operation are! Or some other public access, if not the library.

My CD writer, then my DVD writer, died. Yes, more equipment failure. You might be wondering about my equipment failures, but you have to remember I don't have the latest and greatest technology. In fact, my "newest" computer is now 5 years old. This is a dinosaur in the computer world.

I am very hard on equipment. I never turn it off, because I work at all odd hours, and I hate wasting time to turn it on, start it up, and so on. When I'm ready to work, I'm ready at that instant! I'm very impatient with equipment. That heat buildup is not a computer's friend.

I also have been using this equipment in ways I'm not sure it was meant to be used. Most people have computers at work, and they are on only 8 hours a day. Their home computers are only only 5 or 6 hours a day. They are not printing off 1,500 to 3,000 page books regularly. They are not creating dozens of CDs for dozens of projects. They are not backing everything up to a CD in case of failure. In short, I torture my equipment. And, rather than last for perhaps 10 years, I'm doing good if it lasts 5 or 6 years.

Now, I must admit I was disappointed when the DVD drive broke. But....

In the end, it still means having funds set aside to buy a replacement.

Next month, we'll continue our look at disaster preparedness and ways to prevent meltdown.
