Cleaning Alphabet for Indexers: C-E

C is for Clutter, such as waaaaaay too many family pictures, doo-dads, froggie stickers, post cards, and Sloppy Joe's freebie coasters from your vacation in Key West.

Well, OK. The coasters can stay but only if they are still look halfway decent and are still functional. Otherwise, it's time to return to Sloppy Joe's for some fresh ones!

Seriously, it's really easy to put doo-dads in our offices to remind us of all the good times we've had. I have some of these things in my office, too, but not many. My office isn't filled and overflowing with them. I've edited them out to include only my most "bear-y bestest" ones... like this Reading Bear.

Oh, and let's not forget what we lovingly call Collections. That's the enchanting term for clutter. If you have Collectionitis, how about just keeping your most favorite items of the collection, and donating the rest to Goodwill, or similar charity, for someone else to start a collection? And, of the pieces you keep, why not rotate them? Put out 3 or 4, and the rest away. Then, celebrate the seasonal changes by rotating your collection--get 3 or 4 pieces out that you've had tucked away, and tuck away the ones you've had out.

Except for restaurant cookbooks, I'm not sure I collect anything. Now that I decluttered the entire house, including my office, I really don't want collections of anything. I'm sure this says something about me, psychologically, but I'm not sure what--other than I'm tired of dusting it all! The closest thing that resembles a collection are the linens. I rotate the clean and dirty ones... clean ones come out, and dirty ones go into the laundry. The rest of my family, however, do have collections of doo-dads that they rotate seasonally. This might work for you to, in order to cut down on the clutter that is out everyday.

And then there's the children's artwork....And....

Well, it never ceases. There can be any type of clutter in our offices. But, minimize it this spring.

D is for Dusting. The Big D Word. You know, if you've minimized the clutter, dusting isn't a time-consuming chore anymore.

In addition, I use those Swiffer duster things. I keep the handle and refills in a decorative box in my office. They are handy, and ready to use when I just want a quick break, or if I have just a few minutes. If you keep the box and dusters in the office, for exclusive use in the office, does that qualify for a tax deduction if you have a dedicated home office? Check with your accountant.
