Greetings!
Welcome to my article about great entertainment images on the Web. In these articles, I try to point you all toward great sites that have lots of entertainment images. But this time, I have some cool image related news. The "Powers That Be" in the imaging world are working on a new and improved jpeg format Jpeg2000 will have better image quality, smaller file sizes and many features that current jpegs can't. The current jpeg format is based on research from the 70's, and is drastically lower in quality as the file size is made smaller. A high level of jpeg compression damages an image's quality beyond repair. Jpeg2000 will just become softer as the compression increases. This'll allow better quality at higher compression rates. The new format has a new way of transfer and display that allows the user to download as low or high resolution as is necessary. Current jpegs are lossy, which means that extra image information is discarded and can't be brought back. Jpeg2000 images can be either lossy or lossless, and the same file can be downloaded at different resolutions. And instead of the current rgb only files, the new files can have up to 256 channels. This will allow other color systems like cmyk to be included in the file. As a graphic designer and image hound, this new format sounds really exciting for the image scene. I'll keep you posted as the standard nears completion. For more info, check out this ZDnet article on the subject, Jpeg.org, and this great article that's full of good info! If you'd like to suggest a cool site, or comments or questions about this article, or anything else, feel free to drop me a line at Creed@bigfoot.com, or if you're a member of Suite 101, post your ideas in the discussion area.
