The Simpsons and Star Trek: Too Much of a Good Thing

Well, last time I discussed image types. For a lot more detail on that subject, check out this page at Webreference. You'll know practically all there is to know about image types after you go there.

In this article, I'm going to cover a topic that you've probably stumbled on yourself: too many sites to search through easily. Have you ever tried to use a search engine (any search engine) to find a great page about a really popular show like The Simpsons, or Star Trek? Well, if you don't have all day, don't bother; there are just too many sites to quickly search through and find what you want. You happen to be in luck though, I've done a lot of the work for you.

Let's start with The Simpsons. There are probably around three trillion Simpsons sites, most of which aren't very good. The problem is that you have no way of knowing which sites suck until they steal megabytes of your bandwidth and hours of your life. I started out trying to find an all-inclusive mega-site with every picture I could ever want. Well, I've come to the conclusion that there just isn't one. Whether a site is good or not really depends on which character you're looking for pictures of. Homer and his family are on every page, but the other characters like Jimbo, Groundskeeper Willie, or my personal favorite, Moe, are hard to find really good pictures of.

I rarely ever like official sites; they just don't have the same spirit as a fan site. I had never been to The Official Simpsons Site, so I decided to see how badly they'd missed the mark. As it turned out, the site is pretty good. There isn't an image archive or anything, but the site is entertaining. Moe's here, but not as prominently as I would like. I move on...

Moving on in search of pictures, I found The Simpsons Archive which sounded promising but didn't really deliver in the picture department. Their links to picture sites is small, and has developed some link-rot. Still, if you're looking for anything but pictures (sounds, etc.) the place has a lot. Well, after dancing from link to link, I come across The Simpsons Extravaganza! (now called Last Exit to Springfield) which is a really good site, but the pictures section lacks Moe pictures. Well, forever in search of Moe, I move on. After quite a few wasted minutes, I find Dima's Simpsons Page, which is well designed and brimming with Simpsons things. Unfortunately the picture section has no thumbnails, but the site does have a large and impressive collection of Simpsons icons. Just for that reason alone, it's well worth a visit.
