3. Peter Max

Peter Max is an intriguing mix of icon and recorder of American pop culture. He was a prolific book illustrator, as reflected in the vibrant and exuberant images he created to celebrate the American experience and revel in popular American iconography. The artist's imagery has exerted a sweeping influence in the world of art that is often compared by critics to the Beatles' impact on the music of our time. Unabashedly patriotic, he has created numerous works celebrating our nation's principles of freedom and democracy, including his famous Statue of Liberty paintings, series of American Flags, and works made for five United States presidents.

2. James Thurber

Thurber was an author and cartoonist who gained his fame writing humorous articles and drawing singularly original cartoons. His drawings were published in the New Yorker from 1927 until his death in 1961. As mentioned at the Conference presentation, evidently the comment was made by one of Thurber’s close friends that “if he ever learned to draw he’d no longer be a great illustrator."

1. James Montgomery Flagg

Winner of number one status as the creator of the most effective and resonant image ever created is James Flagg, who created the “I Want You!" poster, one of his many military recruitment posters. Flagg was his own model for the magazine cover of Uncle Sam proclaiming "I Want You." He was an outspoken celebrity known for his wit as well as for his drawings of glamorous women.
