A Beginner's Guide To Hockey Part 2

Goals

The fun part of the game. Scoring a goal. It's what wins games. Basically, a goal is when the puck goes in the net. A goal is given to the player on the scoring team that last touches the puck. If you shoot it, you get the goal. If you shoot it and a player on the other team touches it or the goalie on the other team touches it, you get the goal. If you shoot it, and a player on your team just taps it and it redeflects, he gets the goal and you get the assist. If a player shoots the puck in his own net, the last person to touch the puck on the team that got the goal gets it. If a player shoots the puck in his own net on a faceoff, the centre on the scoring team gets it.

There are ways a goal can be disallowed. If the whistle blows before the puck goes in, it's not a goal. If a player on the scoring team kicks it in or hits it with his hand intentionally in both cases, it's not a goal. If a player on the scoring team interferes with the goaltender either by hitting him intentionally, or having a part of his body or stick in the crease without someone pushing him, it's disallowed. If someone on the defensive team cause a player to kick it by accident, use his hand by accident, pushes the scoring player into his own goalie or push the player in the crease causes the goal to be allowed. If a defensive player knocks the net off before the puck goes in, he gets a 2-minute penalty. If he moves the net intentionally in the last 2 minutes of the third period or at any time in overtime, a player on the team that tried to score will get a penalty shot.

Assists

Players that set up a goal are just as important. They helped make that goal happen. To get an assist the puck must touch your stick and then the goalscorer's stick before he scores. A maximum of two players can get an assist per goal, but sometimes no one does. You do not get an assist if someone on the other team touches the puck before the goalscorer, except the goalie. If you shoot at the goalie, and the puck bounces off of him to the goal scorer, you do get an assist.
