A lot has happened since my hiatus. The Colts, 67's, Whalers and Storm were all trounced from OHL playoffs early. Barrie and Ottawa have still dominated the OHL awards though. Wayne Gretzky retired. Steve Chiasson was taken from this world much too soon. Ottawa and New Jersey were both upset in their first round matches.
I was reading the Saturday Star in Toronto. I have noticed a trend when the Maple Leafs lose ONE game. Everything thinks it's their collapse. When the Leafs started the season on a hot streak and then lost three games in a row, everyone thought that the Leafs were just coming back down to Earth. Then they won, and all these same journalists come back denying ever making the assumption. I'll get back to them on something later, BTW.
The Leafs are not dead. They lost one game to Pittsburgh 2-0. They lost another game 3-0 to Philly but still are alive to tell about it. The Leafs can very well take this series. And be credited with single-handedly destroying the state of Pennsylvania's hopes for the Cup in '99.
Along the way, Tie Domi is making fools of people. First Sandy McCarthy's lie to cover-up the spitting he did. It worked. He made the American media look like fools. Still waiting to get to that. Now, Barnaby is getting the media ready for the big fight him and Domi will have. He said that if the Pens are leading the series big time, or killing the Leafs in a game, him and Domi will go. That's news to Domi. Barnaby has been working on his insults. He told the media so. What was Domi's response? Telling Barnaby that he's already offended his own team, so he shouldn't have to worry about offending others. Ouch! And Domi still won't drop the gloves, as per Quinn's orders.
Back to the American media praising Sandy McCarthy. He spits on Domi and Domi shows the evidence to the ref. McCarthy accuses Domi of a racial slur. An investigation by the NHL into the slur, nothing about the spitting. Domi gets cleared due to lack of evidence (I hear lip-readers were involved) and Domi's case gets dismissed due to the NHL not caring. How does the media take it? Articles talk about how Domi is "accused" of calling McCarthy the N-word. Reporters caught up to McCarthy and GM Bobby Clarke to get their opinions. Clarke know's Domi said something. McCarthy can't figure out why. A one-line quote from Pat Quinn is buried in the middle. Nothing from coach Roger Neilson who probably believed it was nothing. Nothing from the defendant and counter-plaintiff Tie Domi who denies it all. And ladies and gentlemen, you have bias in the media. All the info I give here comes from these sources. So they mention spitting and unproven racial slurs, but I'm the first journalist online to publically put 2 and 2 together. Then again, maybe it's just cause I haven't seen much about it from Canadian journalists who probably already have.
