Last week I said junior hockey is too violent, and really pegged Jeff Kugel. Well, this past Saturday I saw the game between the Brampton Battalion and the Mississauga Ice Dogs in Brampton (even though the arena is on the Brampton/Mississauga city line). Five minutes in, I said something to my Father I have NEVER said before at an OHL game: "Let's leave early!" Jeff Justiz wanting to leave an OHL game early? Perish the thought. But 5 minutes in, guys were dropping their gloves because the other guy looked at him funny. For die hard Brampton fans, this game was great. We left with 10 minutes left in the third, and Brampton leading 8 or 9 to 1, I don't know because I stopped caring. However, since this was the only time Brampton has ever dominated a game, the fans were into it.
BTW, a little aside, Mississauga has a 6000 seat arena, put about 4000 season tickets on sale and sold out. Brampton has a 5000 seat arena, put about 3000 season tickets on sale, and sold 1000. The side of the arena in Brampton with club seats was empty. The day before the game, my Father saw the Ice Dogs play the Soo in Mississauga, and there was only 1 fight. Here, there'd be a fight, a faceoff, someone would start skating, and the whistle would blow for another fight. It was stop-and-go-and-stop-and-go-and-stop the whole game. The lineups at the snack bar didn't help either. You had choices. You could go in the large and fast lines, or the small but slow lines. It got to the point where I was begging my Father to want something from the snack bar just so I could go get it and stay awake. Besides, with four arenas, and the fact that the short lines were in a community arena, I was able to watch some more-exciting novice hockey. Mississauga has had a history of fighting all year, but I've heard Brampton was more exciting. Scott Abbott has been a longtime hockey fan, and I've said his Caledon Canadiens won a southern Ontario hockey championship a few years ago. "General" Stan Butler once coached Canada's World Junior team, and was very successful with the Oshawa Generals. Some of the fans were a little rowdy, and the most cheering was done when they were throwing out prizes to the loudest cheerers. I have to admit. They've got the personnel, the marketing, a little of the fans. There's only one thing missing from this organization. The players. And this leads to my next point.
