Tampa Bay took a step forward by signing oft-injured Wendel Clark from the Leafs. They acquired Bill Ranford in a trade, and they also acquired Craig Janney in a trade. They took Vincent Lecavalier first overall in the draft, and Tampa GM Art Williams called him a future Hall of Famer. John Cullen, the Tampa Bay centre struck with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (or NHL ironically) in March 1997, who needed a bone marrow transplant, was ordered by doctors to pack his bags, go home and play hockey. A real boost for the Lightning this season.
