Out of nowhere, two orderlies practically dragged a screaming teenager into the quiet room where she was given a shot of Haldol and her fingernails were cut. When I came out to see the commotion, I saw Rachel sitting in the room as they closed the door.

An ambulance had been sent to Rachel's home to pick her up, kicking and scratching, to the treatment center that I was leaving.

The irony of it all, today, I am a "mentor" for Rachel. Often a mentor is suggested, (similar to a sponsor for other groups) to show that if recovery is possible. She even copied my painting habit.

It has been a year since her entrance to the hospital, but she has prospered and is home now. In the car, on the way home from the treatment facility, we heard a bird sing. Rachel smiled and started looking out the window. She said that she had never heard anything so beautiful for so long. Today, we work together. Although we are better, we will always have to be on our toes. If one of us feels the need to cut, we talk. We will always have to keep those razors hidden too. It is always an uphill battle. When we are together, painting on our easels, neither of us thinks of the need to cut. That is our triumph.

As with each article shared on RoseMeade's Wellness Center, this one is also meant for those who might find some freedom by our vulnerability and you'll be able to see that you too, can someday feel free enough to let the tears flow.
