For instance, when my father discovered that I was cutting myself, he told me that I needed help. He made a point of letting me know that he did not blame me for hurting myself. Nevertheless, his tears told all. Without meaning to, I had turned his problem of accepting the self-infliction of pain toward myself and felt very ashamed that I had hurt him so. That is why I find it very important for a family member to approach someone like your loved one (or myself) with tact.

Earlier in my life, I refused to accept that I truly had a problem. Instead, I simply wanted to be left alone. Some hypochondriacs react in this way instead of seeking constant attention. My thinking at that time was "that after all, I am an adult; it is my injury, and nobody else's business." I felt that I could deal with my illness and stop harming myself, but I wasn't dealing with it. What was really going on was that I felt temporary relief inside when I was feeling extremely upset by slitting my thigh with a razor blade from time to time. Today, I do know that is not healthy thinking or reacting.
