Pest side

The Pest side of Budapest doesn't offer so much lookout points like Buda side, but I can show you some interesting places.

Dome of St Stephen Basilica (90 m)

St Stephen Basilica is the largest church in Budapest. It was built in the second half of the 19th century. Its architects were Jozsef Hild, Miklos Ybl and Jozsef Kauser. The church was conseciate in 1905 and get Basilica Minor award in 1931. The St Stephen Basilica is located north of the former town Pest; in opposite Buda Castle; and near the Chain Bridge, about 500 metres from the Danube. The church is 96 m high from the street level and the lookout terrace is about 90 m above the Danube level. You can see the heart of Pest as a large map with its streets and housetops, and in Buda side Castle District and Buda Hills. The lookout terrace opens from April to October, and you can buy ticket at the entrance of the church. Approach: About 5 minutes walking from Deak Square or Chain Bridge.

Panorama Wheel in amusement park (80 m)

The Amusement Park is situated in the City Park, next to the Zoo Park. One of its oldest attraction the 31 m high Panorama Wheel. It is not so large as Vienna's in Prater, but it give you a nice panorama. You can discover from here the City Park with Zoo Park, Széchenyi Baths and Vajdahunyad Castle, the towers and roofs of Pest with the dome of St Stephen basilica and Parliament, and in the background you can see Buda Hills as well. The Amusement Park is opens all year round, but in winter season many funs are closed. The tower of Elephant House (70 m)

In the Budapest Zoo Park, elephants has a beautiful house, which was built in 1912. Originally the elephant house had a tower, which was demolished in 1915 but rebuilt in 1998. The renovated building won the Europa Nostra award in 2000. The tower is opened for Zoo Park's visitors. From here you can see the whole City Park above the tree level, with Budapest's towers in background. Budapest Panorama Balloon (200 m)

Some years ago, next to the Nyugati Railway Station was built the Westend City Shopping Center. Its parking house was built above railway platforms. In the top level you can find a large balloon. Its diameter is 22 metre, and it is filled with helium. It is capable lifting 25-30 passengers at same time to 150 metres above Budapest city centre. The gondola is able to carry two wheelchairs at one time. This balloon is the highest observation point in Pest side of Budapest. The balloon has four 15 minutes flight in every hour (depending on weather conditions) to discover Budapest by bird's eye view. You can see the whole city centre, Margaret Island, City Park and Buda Hills. The fare (2002) is 3000 Ft (USD 12) for adults. http://www.budapestballon.com
