Restaurants in Budapest

When visitors arrived to Hungary they often want to taste some special Hungarian dishes. Our guests things we always eat gulyas with galuska, fish soup and fat and hot foods. It is not true. These foods are traditional and well known, but we also eat other typical Hungarian dishes what everyone would enjoy.

I would like to show you some famous restaurants, cafes and confectioners of Budapest where you can discover our gastronomy.

Gundel Restaurant

The 108 years old Gundel is one of the most famous restaurant in Budapest. Gundel family owned the restaurant for more generation. Today's restaurant is in the City Park next to the Zoo Park. Its chef, who is the proud owner of a Europe award, and cooks use traditional Gundel recipes to create works of art in food. Visitors can enjoy the music of a virtuoso gypsy ensemble as well. Bagolyvár Restaurant (The Owl's Castle)

You can find it next to the Gundel Restaurant. In 1913, Károly Gundel decided to open a family-type restaurant in the same neighbourhood for the visitors of the Budapest Zoo. The owners of the Gundel Restaurant decided to revive the Owl's Castle and to bring back its old charm. Nowadays it follows the gastronomic traditions of Gundel. The furnishings of the restaurant evoke a middle-class dining room of the early twentieth century. The tables are covered by heavy damask tablecloths, there are old engravings on the walls. During summertime it is a delight to spend some time at one of the two shady garden-terraces at the perimeter of the Zoo. This restaurant is unique in Hungary, because women cook and serve their guests.

Kárpátia Restaurant

Kárpátia was established in 1877. It waits for you with unique atmosphere, Hungarian gothic interior and live gypsy music. The restaurant offers specialities of the Hungarian cuisine, the finest wines of the Hungarian wine regions. The Kárpátia has a large terrace in the courtyard of the former monastery.

Restaurant Mátyás Pince

A truly historic restaurant in the heart of Budapest! Our restaurant, which opened in 1904 and serves traditional Hungarian specialities. The furnishings and fittings all recall the age and deeds of the great Hungarian ruler King Matthias (15th century). The lively mood is heightened by waiters and waitresses dressed in period costume. In the evening one of the world's most famous Gypsy violinists, Sándor Déki Lakatos, and band perform for guests.
