National Parks in Hungary

Part One

I would like to show you Hungarian National Parks, where you can discover lots of interesting and rare plants and animals. In National Parks make a possibility to take the colour coded and educational trails and the bicycle trail. I hope you will visit one or more of them when you visit Hungary.

Körös-Maros National Park

The Körös-Maros National Park was established in 1997 as the seventh national park in Hungary. Its total protected area is 51,125 hectares, and 6419 hectares, which is strictly protected. The waters of the Southern Plains play an important role in the migration of birds. The National Park's area can be divided into two different landscape characters. One of them is the Körös region including the area along the Körös Rivers. The other territory is with the finest topsoil of the country, called the loess ridge of Békés-Csanád. The most viable population of the Great Bustard is found in the northern part of Békés in Dévaványa.

Interesting places: Réthely Visitor Centre -Great Bustard Reserve; Nature Conservation and Local History Museum in Kardoskut.

Kiskunság National Park http://www.knp.hu/

The Kiskunság National Park was established in 1975 as the second national park in Hungary. The total extension of protected areas is 76,600 hectares including the solid plains and lakes formed on the lower flood plain of River Danube with sand dunes sand plains as well as swamps and remains of forests. Beside the nine separate units of the Kiskunság National Park there are protected landscape areas and nature conservation areas. The UNESCO-MaB declared two-thirds of the national park as a Biosphere Reserve, while some wetland habitats are included in the Ramsar Convention. It is dedicated to maintain traditional farming lifestyle like the breeding of ancient Hungarian domestic animals.

Hortobágy National Park http://www.hnp.hu/

The first and so far the biggest national park of Hungary was established in 1973 on a 52,000 hectare area. Its recent size is 81,000 hectares, one third of which is wetlands protected by the Ramsar Convention. UNESCO recorded the National Park on the World Heritage list in 1999, in the category of cultural landscapes. In Hortobágy there are four different areas available for visitors so that the characteristic natural values are protected and the conditions of demonstration are maintained. The nature trails on the Puszta at Hortobágy fishponds, on the Marshes of Egyek and on Lake Tisza give an overview of important habitats as well as natural and historical heritage. Some of these areas are closed from visitors.
