Bridges of Budapest

Árpád Bridge (Árpád-híd)

Parallel with the Petöfi Bridge the north part of the city had needed a new bridge as well. This bridge connects the north part of outer boulevard with Obuda via north peak of the Margaret Island. Its building works began in 1939, but it was interrupted in 1943 because of the war. Its original name would had been Arpad (after the main leader of conquering Hungarians). This half finished bridge was the only one, which was not blown up by German Army in Budapest during the war.

The building works followed in 1948 and finished in 1950. The new bridge was named after the Soviet leader, Stalin, but before the revolution in 1956 the bridge get its original name, Arpad Bridge. The bridge was widened in 1980s.

Interesting thing is that the Arpad Bridge is the longest bridge with its 928 m long.
