Bridges of Budapest

There caused a difficulty that the riverbank level of Pest is 5 m lower than Buda side. Heavy carts were not able to run into the bridge. They had to make a detour via Chain Bridge.

During the war, in January 1945 it was blow up, but it was the first rebuilt bridge in Budapest. (1946) The last reconstruction was in 1980s. At that time the boring grey colour was replaced with the original light green.

Last but not least I would mention Turul (totem birds of ancient Hungarians) birds. The four birds decorated top of two gates of the bridge. Suicides and who are craving the limelight often climb to Turul. In these cases firemen closed the bridge and bring down these people. The action causes a large traffic jam in south Buda and the centre of Pest.
