Miskolc (Lillafured)

View of Palace Hotel
(Part Four)

Lillafüred It is a well-known and much favoured holiday resort in the town. Lillafüred built on the meeting point of the Garadna and Szinva valley, on the side of the Hamori Lake. The place took its name from Lilla Vay who was the wife of the minister of agriculture Count Bethlen András. The route leading from Miskolc to Lillafüred leads onto one of the most beautiful ravines of the country. Its two famous points are the Molnár-rock marked with a cross and the Puskaporos-ravine.

The name of Lillafüred associated with the beautifully furnished Palace Hotel built between 1927 and 1930 according to the plan of Lux Kálmán. The hotel is surrounded by a terraced hanging garden and a huge park. The Szinva valley with its romantic beauty and the Hamori Lake can be seen from the park, the terraces and rooms of the hotel. The lake itself is not natural; the embankment closing the valley and dam the water of the Garadna back was built in 1813 initiated by the Fasola family.

Lillafüred can be reached from Miskolc on either public road or narrow-gauge railway. The railway opened in 1921 and goes through beautiful rocky land, picturesque valleys and even Garadna can be reached on the route.

Anna cave

Near the waterfall flowing beside the Palace Hotel opens the tuff cave in the wall of the hanging garden. The capricious shaped decorations of the cave somewhere show the remains of the one time flora, the one time grass, the moss, the prints of leaves and the remains of animals with anatomical accuracy.

István cave

The stalactite cave was opened for the public in 1931. The temperature inside is always 10 °C regardless of the season. The clime of the cave has good effect for people suffering from asthma. Cures have been taken here for years - in autumn and spring for two weeks - for children suffering from chronic respiratory illness.

Szeleta cave

It is a cave north-east of Lillafüred on the crest of the hill, 96 metres above the road in a steep rock. Its 20 metres long, 15 metres wide and 8 metres tall vestibule leads through the entrance of the 40 metres long wider corridor and to the 30 metres long narrower branch. From the branch smaller and larger niches are open. The results of the excavation, which started by Herman Ottó's urging, toured round the world in 1906. Cavemen's finely made implements were found there. The most well known ones are the grey coloured finely shaped spearheads made of "chalcedony".
