Avas Hill

Next to the city centre is a hill which is a good direction point for tourists. At its foot is the best-known religious monument of Miskolc the Avas Reformed Church, which is the most significant monuments from the late Gothic age. The forerunner of the present church was a semi-circular chapel built in the 13th century. In the 14th and 15th century the chapel grew and the hall church obtained its final shape in 1589. A bell-tower was build in 1557 You may found the Chime of the bell http://www.miskolc.hu The old cemetery next to the church and bell-tower is a resting place of the 17th century gallery slaves, Protestant preachers who had been sold in to captivity during the Counter Reformation.

When you walk up the hill in narrow curve path, you found little houses which are originally wine cellars of residents of Miskolc. On the top of the hill is a look-out (and TV) tower. There you can take a view to the city and the Bükk Mountains.

Castle of Diosgyor

The castle was built on a square ground plan with four corner towers. In the 14th century it was one of the favourite residence and important political centre of King Louis the Great. Later this castle was a wedding present of queens. According to old tales the constructive works of the castle were financed by a pot of gold were found under a nut-tree. So its name came from there (dio means nut). By the end of the 18th century the castle lost its importance, and the castle became the stone-source of the buildings of the area. The exploration and restoration of the castle began in 1953. Unique, it was reconstructed so that original and added parts are easy to tell them apart. Owing to the constant restoration the Diosgyor Castle is one of the most important medieval monuments of the country Today the castle is a museum. ($1.00/person) Interesting thing is that the 200 Ft banknote shows this castle. Castle of Diosgyör is a home some cultural events. There are open air theatre performances, pop concerts, historical events. The well known is the International Kalaka Folk Festival (begin of July). There are non-stop concerts in three stages for a week. Visitors and guests arrives from Europe and North America as well. Next to the castle is the open air thermal bath of Diosgyor.

Miskolctapolca

It is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Miskolc 7 km away from the centre of the city. (Get bus no 2 from Buza square terminal) Originally Tapolca was an independent settlement, but in the mid 20th century it was added to Miskolc. Tapolca is a very old settlement. Anonymus the famous chronicler already mentioned the name.
