Miskolc (city centre)
The centre of the city Miskolc is a modern city with large modern housing estates with eleven storeys concrete buildings and large shopping centres like Miskolc Plaza and Szinva Park in its centre. Fortunately some old classicist style houses and baroque churches from the 18th and 19th century were survived the least three decades. Today most of them are reconstructed and show the original face of the old town. The main street is the car free Szechenyi utca where only trams run away. There is the National Theatre of Miskolc. http://www.olh.hu/szinhaz The Museum of Theatre can be found at 3 Déryné Street. There are Legacies of the actors and actresses were put in place raising a monument to the memory of the actors who were attached to Miskolc. A month ago I was in Miskolc for five days. At that time was held the Bartok and Verdi music festival. There were opera performances in the Miskolc National Theatre (among others Verdi: Aida, Requiem,) and open air concerts and performances in Szechenyi street and Erzsebet square. Erzsebet square is next to the Town Hall. There is the old Erzsebet Bath (today is under reconstruction). The so called Rakoczi House is the home of Miskolc Gallery. The Greek Orthodox Church was established by Greek traders who settled down there. The largest Greek Orthodox collection is also in Miskolc. Herman Otto Museum The museum was named after the famous scientist, who made some archaeological excavations in the prehistoric sites of the caves of the Bükk. He wrote also several scientific books on this subject. The centre of the building dates back to the 15th century. Other parts were added between 1669 and 1953. This is one of the best country museums in Hungary. The paleo-archeological collection is based on the relics of the Bükk culture. The arm collection , the department of the history of costumes and the furniture and ceramics collection are unusually rich. Log Church The entrance of the churchyard is a beautifully carved so called Székely-gate. There was a wooden church on this spot in 1698, which was rebuilt several times. It was pulled down in 1938 and a new church was built in Székely style. City transport The city has two tram lines maybe the same route. No 1 goes from the Tiszai railway station to Diosgyör No 2 goes to Iron works. Trams run through the city centre along the pedestrian precinct. There are two types of trams. Old ones have a pet name 'Bengali'. According to old tram drivers this tram accelerated and run so slow and sluggish like a full Bengal tiger. http://villamos.budapest.hu/miskolc/jarm... http://villamos.budapest.hu/miskolc/foto...
