As in previous years, now I would like to show you some important and not too important but interesting things that have jubilee in this year.

The great flood of Szeged

Today Szeged is a sunny town in the Southern part of Hungary on the bank of the River Tisza. This quiet river, which inspired many poets in past centuries, demolished town Szeged 125 years ago. In the middle of the 18th century, the river regulations on the upper section of River Tisza cut many bands; the river become shorter and made the flow faster. In the year 1879 people were awaiting the flood, but it was larger than usual. Many dams were broken around the town and the water surrounded it. On the night, 11th of March, 1879 the temporary dike broke and the water flooded the whole town. Thousands of people left the town and moved to villages around Szeged. Originally there were more than 6000 houses and less than 400 of them were standing when the river left the town 186 days (about half a year) later. After the flood Szeged was rebuilt after plans of Lajos Lechner. The town gained its new structure with boulevards and avenues. The great flood brought the empathy of European cities that sent aid to rebuild the town. The new boulevards of Újszeged district were named after these cities.
