The Balaton Region nowadays has five well-known Wine regions. In this article I would like to show you them.
2000 years ago, Romans were the first who brought vines to this land. The favourable climate and the good volcanic soil offered good conditions for vines. During the last centuries there was established a famous wine culture around Lake Balaton. Nowadays, hillsides and slopes are spotted with little winepress cottages and vineyards that invite strangers to visit them. If you spend longer time at the Balaton Region, there is an opportunity to visit more than just the usual attraction, wine regions. There you can find old traditions and customs that will be very interesting for strangers. The best time is early autumn when you can enjoy the traditional grape harvest with other cultural events. Badacsony Wine Region This wine region is situated on old volcanoes (Badacsony, Gulács), which determine the landscape of the western basin of Lake Balaton. There, white grapes are cultivated. The two renowned brands are Olaszrizling and Kéknyelű. Balatonfelvidék (Balaton High Land) Wine Region This is situated in the northern part of Lake Balaton between Aszófő and Káli Basin. This territory is rich in white grapes and the most famous brands are Olaszrizling, Szürkebarát and Rizlingszilváni. Balatonfüred-Csopak Wine Region This region has a sub-Mediterranean climate because of the sunny hills on the northern shore of the lake. The most famous wines are Rajnai Rizling and Olaszrizling, but in the Tihany peninsula red wines such as Tihanyi Zweigelt and Tihanyi Merlot are favourable. Balatonboglár The southern shore of Lake Balaton is mainly flat, but in Balatonbolglar it is rather hilly, which offers a similar condition for vine growing as in the northern shore. There are large, unbroken plantations in this area. The local wines are white, like Chardonnay, Királyleányka and Rajnai Rizling. Zalai Wine Region This is the youngest amongst our wine regions. Among the Zala Hills the hard working farmers produce white wines, Olaszrizling and Rizlingszilváni. Wine route societies guide visitors and tourists to the most famous cellars and cottages, where they can try the best wines and there is also an opportunity to buy. The trademark of cellars is a quality certificate, so you can be sure that you will find there good wine and old tradition. http://www.borkultura.hu/borvidek/indexa... Go To Page: 1
