Part Two

As I promised in my last article, now I would like to show you many interesting places in the Balaton region. I think it will be very difficult within a short article, but I will try to mention the most interesting things. For more useful information visit the following websites: http://www.tourinform.hu/angol/index.htm http://www.hungary.com/servlet/page?_pag... http://www.bfnpi.hu/en_folap.asp

The northern shore of Lake Balaton

The most famous place is Tihany. The Tihany peninsula is a pearl in the middle of the lake. It is a beautiful background for photos. First of all, I have to mention the abbey and the monastery, which were founded in 1055. The centre of the village has kept its original state. A ferry and boat service connect the peninsula with the southern shore.

Badacsony is one of the most well known settlements, because of its white wines. The 438 m high volcanic Badacsony Hill with its plateau is a well-known picture of the western part of the Lake Balaton. The hill offers a nice excursion and look out points for tourists. In the village is the Egry József Museum, which shows the collection of the great painter of Lake Balaton.

Balatonfüred is the largest town in the northern shore. The town, besides its holiday centre function, is a medical centre which is famed for its mineral water for 300 years. Its first stone theatre was built in 1831, and the Lake Balaton's first steamship was launched here in 1846.

The southern shore of Lake Balaton

Siófok, the capital of Lake Balaton, situated 15 km along the lake. Imre Kálmán, the composer of the Csárdás Queen was born here, and his house of birth is a museum today. Next to the shore are many hotels where you can enjoy your holiday.

The gothic church of Köröshegy was built in the 1460s. The fortified church had been restored. Organ concerts invite guests here every summer.

Balatonboglár is known for its wines and its cultural traditions. Next to the old cemetery with the two old chapels (red and blue one) is the place of regular exhibitions and cultural events. The Globe lookout tower offers a good panorama to the northern shore and hills of Somogy.

The western bay of Lake Balaton

Keszthely is situated at the western corner of Lake Balaton. This town is famous for its Festetics Chateau, which was built in 1745, and for the Georgicon, one of the first agricultural colleges in Europe. You can find there the Balaton Museum, which presents the flora, fauna and history of the Balaton region.
