Most Hungarian people take their holiday between June and August. On the base of the Hungarian Labour Code every employee must have at least three weeks paid holiday every year. Since the 1990s years, more and more people spend their holiday abroad. According to statistics, most favourite destinations are Greece, Italy, Spain and Austria. In spite of this trend, many Hungarians spend their free time in Hungarian holiday resorts. Now, in this article I would like to show you the most popular places.
Lake Balaton Lake Balaton is the largest lake not only in Hungary, but also in Central-Europe. I know that there are many wider, deeper and larger lakes worldwide, despite this fact we call it as the Hungarian Sea. It is long (78 km) but tight (maximum 10 km) and the deepest point is only 11 m near the Tihany peninsula. The southern shore is shallow so you may want to wade rather than swim. Opposite is the northern shore; its bed is much deeper. Lake Balaton has a good transport connection. There are railway lines along both southern and northern shores and there is a motorway connection up to Siófok, the capital of Balaton (south east). On the lake there are regular ship services between the two sides, for car users there is one ferry service between Tihany and Szántód. The Balaton Region has many interesting places that are good destinations if the weather is not so good. They are, for example, Tihany, Badacsony (wine), Tapolca (cave with an underground lake) Keszthely (castle) and Héviz (spa), Balatonfüred (spa), Siófok and the Mountains of Bakony. I would like to show you the Balaton Region also in an independent article. Lake Velence It is a smaller lake half way to Balaton from Budapest. It offers good beaches and places for sunbathers. Lake Tisza This artificial lake was created in the 1960s, when a dam was built in the River Tisza at Kisköre. Nowadays it is a natural paradise where people can find good places for bathing, angling, and nature-lovers can discover the wild life of the old dead branches of the river. Spas Hungary has lots of natural and artificial hot springs and there were built many spas since the Middle Ages. Besides Budapest, most famous are Héviz, west of Lake Balaton, Bük near the Austrian border, Hajdúszoboszló on the Great Plain near Debrecen, and Miskolc-Tapolca at Miskolc. At these places you can find hotels and apartments, and every spa offer medical treatment as well. Go To Page: 1 2
