As I in the previous year began, now I would like to show you some important, and not too important, but interesting things that have jubilee in this year.
First of all, I have to mention this historic event which was an example for Hungarians who fought for a free country in the past. You can read more on Rákóczi in my previous articles. http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/9533... Vilmos Zsolnay (1828-1900) He was a pioneer of Hungarian porcelain manufacturing. Vilmos Zsolnay was born 175 years ago and he settled his factory 150 years ago in Pécs, Hungary. In the first years the factory made mainly fancy goods. Later, in the end of the 19th century, they produced consumer goods and building ornaments as well. For example, Budapest has many buildings which have Zsolnay porcelain ornament like Museum of Applied Arts, or Hungarian National Bank or tiles of stations of Budapest's first underground railway line. Zhe Zsolnai porcelain trademark shows five towers. It refers to Pécs, because its German name Fünfkirchen means Five Churches. If you visit Pécs you can find there the Zsolnay Ceramic Exhibition. http://www.drawrm.com/ztilemus.htm Ferenc Deák (1803-1876) Ferenc Deák's name became known during the so-called Age of Reform (1830-1845) as a member of the opposition in the Parliament. After the revolution of 15th Marc 1848, Deák was the Minister of Justice in the First Hungarian Responsible Government and after the defeat of the Independence War he retired from public life for ten years. In the 1860's years there were many chances to win more right for Hungary. Deák was the leader of those groups who fought for the right of 1848. This political action led to the so-called Compromise of 1867, establishing the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. This was the base of Hungarian economical boom of the end of the 19th century. Later Deák was named as the Sage of the Country. The 180th birthday of the National Anthem (the 22nd January, 1823) The Hungarian Anthem (Himnusz) was written by Ferenc Kölcsey 180 years ago. This poem shows the stormy history of Hungary and asks help for Hungarians from the God. The melodí of Himnusz was composed by Ferenc Erkel, who was one of the most famous Hungarian composers in the 19th century. http://www.mek.iif.hu/porta/szint/human/... János (John) Neumann (1903-1957) The world famous mathematician was born in Hungary 100 years ago. He moved to the USA in 1930. His name is well known from his theory of games and the theory of computer. He was also a member of the team that built the first electronic computer. Go To Page: 1 2
