Winter Wonderland

It seems our world is one huge Winter Wonderland! Almost everywhere you look there is snow, sleet and freezing temperatures--even in ordinarily "sunny" Florida! I miss the hummingbirds and look forward with baited breath for their return! But until then, I grow increasingly concerned about our other feathered friends.

Being very warm blooded, they need an extraordinary amount of food to maintain their high temperature and constant activity! Most of their time is spent in search of food, therefore any help we give is, I'm certain, greatly appreciated.

Here in Texas we enjoy the company of many wonderful birds, such as sparrows, cardinals, blue jays, red-wing black birds, mocking birds, scissor tails, robins, road runners, owls, hawks and buzzards, just to name a few! So in order to maintain feeders, it takes a large variety of seed. The cardinals and blue jays especially love sunflower seed. The smaller birds prefer smaller seed such as red millet, white millet, etc. But birds also enjoy fresh foods such as vegetables (cooked or raw). So, rather than throwing out those left over veggies, why not give them to your feathered friends, that way you don't waste a nibble!

I've noticed the birds are visiting my feeders much more often than usual, even some I have never noticed before! Apparently, food is scarce! So while we wait for the hummingbirds return, it is important that we not forget all the other feathered friends that bring such joy to our lives. If you are like me, you not only feed the hummingbirds, any bird is important to you. And now, with temperatures plummeting, they need us more than ever!

Trivia: Did you know that it is against the law to pick up feathers off the ground? Yep! It is! It seems that in order to protect endangered species, and to keep others from becoming "endangered" it is illegal to pick them up or to use them for crafting. What do you think? Do agree with that it should be illegal to pick up feathers?
