I recieve lots of questions from readers and thought I would share the Most frequently asked questions with you.
What is the recipe for "home made" nectar? 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. How often should I clean my feeder? Feeders should be cleaned frequently, as often as every 3-4 days. In hot weather, nectar will sour easily which can be very deadly to the hummingbirds. Do Hummingbirds perch? Yes, hummingbirds do perch and appreciate having safe places to perch away from predators and out of weather. How can I keep wasps and ants away from my feeder? There really is no sure-fire method of keeping them away. There are ant traps that you can purchase, or make. A container of water place directly beneath the feeder will deter ants. I try to spray my feeders regularly with water to rinse away any sugary residue from the outside of the feeder which seems to help some with wasps. The hummingbirds have suddenly stopped coming to my feeders as often as they did at the beginning of spring, why? Hummingbirds prefer natural nectar, if you have many flowers blooming in your neighborhood, they will go to them first. But don't stop putting your feeders out, bcause even though you may not always see them they are probably still using you feeders and more importantly, your feeders will provide food on those days when weather or other factors make natural nectar unavailable or limited. Remember, they must at least consume half their body weight each day. They may also be feeding their young, and must spend much of their time gathering insects. How fast can a hummingbird fly? It is my understanding that hummingbirds fly approximately 60mph! At that rate, flying non-stop, it would take 41.67 hours to fly 2500 miles during migration! Amazing! Especially since hummingbirds are the worlds smallest bird! All the more reason why they are such an inspiration.
