The Hummingbird Winter Dilemma: To Feed or Not to Feed!

© Judy L. Evridge

Every year around this time I find myself wondering: Should I leave my Hummingbird Feeders out all winter or shouldn't I? It is a tough decision, and it seems no one has a conclusive answer!

I have read that leaving the feeders up causes these beautiful little gems to linger perhaps just a little too long. This is myth, of course, because like every other living thing hummingbirds have biological clocks too! And, they are much smarter than we humans give them credit for! Like every other species, they too instinctively know when it is time to go! Our adoration of these adorable little creatures induces us to want to hang on to them just a little while longer.

Still, there have been accounts of them staying much too long. Perhaps, they aren't as healthy as they should be. Or for some reason they are in a weakened condition. As with all living creatures sometimes things just don't go according to the textbook description. Such as the story in the book: "A Hummingbird In My House', by Arnette Heidcamp. And the article in "Birdscope" newsletter entitled: "Feeder Watcher Spots Winter Rarity" by Margaret Barker

Since there are such conflicting opinions, I have come to the conclusion that it must be a matter of common sense and personal judgment. There are, however, two important factors to consider when making your decision:

  1. Your ability to Commit yourself.

  2. Severity of weather common for your region.

In the spring, feeders only need to be cleaned every 3-4 days. In extremely hot weather it is always a good idea to clean them often to prevent the nectar from souring. But winter presents a completely different set of problems such as freezing or being diluted by blowing rain.

Commitment can be a huge and daunting undertaking! Are you willing to trudge out into the rain, sleet, snow and piercing winds to maintain hummingbird feeders? To prevent freezing, feeders must be maintained daily. The water may freeze over night! If not, then the answer of course, is obvious. If you answered Yes, then you truly are a hummingbird lover! *S*

Here in Texas, the saying goes: "If you don't like the weather, hang around a few minutes, it'll change!" We can NEVER depend on the weather! It can be sunshiny and beautiful one minute and pouring down rain the next. Believe it or not I have even seen it raining in the backyard and snowing in the front yard!
