Teaching Human Rights Early from the Beginning

In public schools in Indonesia, bullying fellow students of other ethnic groups is not uncommon. This translates into high juvenile delinquencies and injustices. Even hate crimes do exist among students of public schools literally in all levels, from the primary school to university.

When ethnic-related fights occurred, most teachers did nothing to stop them from re-occurring. They were not comfortable with the fact that SARA (sex, religion and race) topics are legally forbidden to be discussed.

Wouldn’t we like to see the basics of human rights lesson being taught in schools, before more innocent souls lose their innocence?

[Note: If you are a human rights activist who are familiar with human rights education for schools and colleges, I’d like to exchange ideas and information. Solidarity for Motherland and Nation has jointly established a Human Rights Education Network in Indonesia to focus on human rights education in general. We’d appreciate collaborations with other organizations worldwide. Yours truly is the Official Representative of this organization and can be contacted by e-mail at penpusher@suite101.com. Thank you.]
