I've been searching long and wide: what can I do in an emergency where human rights are being violated everyday? The answer is not easy, not easy at all. I've been turned down, laughed at and blown away. But one needs to do what one needs to do, doesn't she?
Here are some tips for all of us who care but lack the official authority:
1. First things first, contact your local representatives. Surprisingly, they do listen, especially when the letter sent is sympathetic and sincere.
2. Send out letters of concern to NGOs.
3. Print out pamphlets on the cause and add your comment.
4. Convey the messages to anybody you know and be consistent.
Talk in churches, in schools and groups as a way of educating and informating the public on the causes.
5. Volunteer to volunteer. Go to human rights NGOs and Peace and Conflict researchers. Talk to them and help them out.
6. Invite survivors of the abuse concerned to talk in a forum.
If you reside outside the country where the human rights abuse takes place, write to the government of the particular country. Locate the addresses of their consulates and embassies, and write to them.
