Cacti on your Windowsill

Jun 1, 1999 - © Norine Woods

their natural habitat, the forest or jungle, these plants do not grow in soil. Instead, they grow attached to another plant, often a tree. They absorb nutrients from the air through their leaves and stems. Another name for theses is air plants. some familiar jungle cacti are the Christmas, Easter and orchid cacti.

Temperature - These plants like an even temperature of between 50 and seventy degrees, keeping within the cooler range during winter when the plant is resting.

Water - Lots of water when the buds appear. Water as you would any house plant, and mist the leaves often. A little less water during the resting period, but don't allow the plant to dry out completely.

Light - These plants like lots of light, but not full sun. They thrive in windows facing the east.

Propagation - These plants root readily from stem cuttings. When they're growing, keep them pot bound to encourage flowering. Root them in peat moss, and grow them in a peat moss based potting soil to which you have added some coarse sand.
