Though in most cases you will want to do your invitations a reasonable length of time before the party, the rest of the preparations are simple enough to do in just a couple of days.

Let's start with things that will take more time if you decide to use them.
INVITATIONS:
You can go all out with invitations or keep it simple. Use your computer to make up one with a beach design (palm tree, shells, fish, etc.) and the basic details. Invite your guests to dress for the beach or as tourists (You know those tacky tourists with white legs and black knee-high socks, zinc oxide on the nose and matching Hawaiian print shirts and swimming trunks.). Especially if it is a winter party, give prizes for the best, most colorful or fun costumes.
Have fun with the idea on the invitations. You can call it a "Life's a Beach...Party!" or a "Jimmy Buffett Buffet", maybe tell everyone, "We're having a Lulu of a Luau...and you're invited!", or "We're Happy as Clams that (reason for party)! Join us for a Clambake". Use your imagination.
OUTDOOR LIGHTING:
If you are having this party outdoors and want to spend the time and effort, you can create a very party mood with outdoor lighting. Some possibilities are torches, candles, tin can lanterns, Christmas lights strung in the trees, or special Beach Party style patio lights.
