It's that time of year again. We have too much to do, too little time, and we are starting to feel like we are being pulled in a dozen directions. Following are a few random tips to help make your holidays safer, which will make them less stressful and more fun.
Trees Fire Proofing your Christmas Tree
INGREDIENTS
2 cups Karo Syrup (Grocery Store)
2 ounces Liquid Chlorine Bleach (Grocery Store)
2 pinches Epsom Salt (Drug Store)
1/2 teaspoon "Borax" (Grocery Store)
One Teaspoon Chelated Iron (Garden Store)
1. With a saw make fresh cut to the bottom of your Christmas tree. Try to cut level taking off at least one inch.
2. Immediately after you cut the tree mix your fireproofing ingredients. Fill a two gallon bucket with hot water to within one inch of the top then add ingredients and mix well.
3. Immediately stand the tree in this solution and let it sit for 24 hours.
4. Place your tree in a stand with a well where liquids can be poured (SAVE REMAINING SOLUTION).
5. After your tree is in the stand fill solution from the bucket into tree well using a cup or other smaller container.
6. Every day without exception, the well of the tree stand must be "TOPPED-UP" with the solution from the two gallon bucket.
Follow these simple directions and your tree will be fireproofed.
Some of the other beneficial side-affects of this procedure are that the needles will not drop and you will notice an increase in natural pine fragrance. Longlasting Christmas Trees:
When buying Christmas trees, check for freshness by rubbing your finger across the cut side of the base. If the stump is gooey with sap, it is a fresh tree.
Douglas fir, spruce, and Scotch pine hold their needles better than other varieties.
To keep the needles greener longer, cut an extra inch or two from the bottom of the tree and stand the tree in a bucket of cold water in which one cup of sugar, molasses, syrup, or honey has been added. Let the tree soak for 2 or 3 days prior to decorating.
Snow for the Christmas Tree:
Snow for your Christmas tree can be made from a thick solution of powdered soap flakes and water. Beat at high speed with an electric mixer until the mixture is stiff. Spoon the mixture onto the tree branches and limbs. This makes an unbelievably beautiful tree.
Lights Safety Tips
Check for frayed wires, if any discard. Check whether lights you are using are indoor or outdoor. Use accordingly. Look for and use the newer 'cool' burning lights.
