Time for a Seasonal Sort

School has started, the days are beginning to get cooler, soon the windows will be kept shut and fall will officially be here. Before that happens clear out all of the old summer stuff that you won't be using again.

Go through the kid's clothes, your own closet, and all of the summer sport and playthings. You have heard it before, but it still deserves repeating: As you sort, make three piles 1) throw away - these are things that are too old, too worn out, nobody wants them; 2) get out of your house - these can be giveaways to charities or sold at garage sales or consignment shops, but they will NOT come back into the house; 3) keepers - these still fit, are still played with, can be used another season.

Garage Sales

In my part of the country, northern USA, you will want to have a garage sale fairly soon before the weather gets too cold or rainy. Choose a day well ahead of the advertised date to go through the things going on sale. Do they need cleaning or mending? Do it now. Tag items now to avoid having to do it the last minute on sale day.

Find ways to display things to their best advantage. Put colorful, high interest items out front where they will attract attention. Hang as many items as possible for easier viewing. If you are displaying on tables try to keep the piles as low as possible so they don't get tumbled all over the place and everything can be seen.

Have a private area where people can try things on without going into your home. Blankets can be used to curtain off a corner for a changing room.

If you are selling any electrical items be to sure to have outlets and/or extension cords available.

Have plenty of spare change. A good mix is: 2 -$10; 6 - $5; 20 - $1 and $10 in small change.

Be ready early, at least an hour before your designated opening time. No matter how early you are someone will be there looking for the good deals. Have a plan for the items left at the end of the sale. Know where you are taking them - Goodwill, Salvation Army, a shelter, or any other charity. In some locations the charity will come pick items up. Do not bring them back into the house or even stuff them in a corner of the garage.
